Asian hornet

#1 Post by fdupre » Thu Jun 08, 2023 8:36 am

Hello everyone,

I share with you the photos of an Asian hornet taken under the microscope. Once "unfolded", it must be at least 3 cm long :

I found him literally writhing on the floor. I went to get a Petri dish to take it and presto, under the microscope :)

The head with the 4x objective in reflected light:

If my understanding is right, the antenna are from a female? I'm not familiar with this species but other related species can be identified by the number of segments in the antenna flagellum. This one looks to have 10, so I think it would be female.

Odds are in favor of it being female ( without my actually trying to identify it) as males are rarely seen except for mating purposes. This is true of most social insects such as bees and ants. The females do all the work..wy wife concurs!

Hello everyone and thank you very much for your visit :)
You are right because it does indeed appear to be a female (10 rings for a female and 11 rings for a male).
but also because of its size (more than 3 centimeters) which is larger than the males (2.5 centimeters).
Sincerely;
Franck
