All Creatures Great and Small by Extension

I have been collecting samples of microbes for some time now. There are some very small creatures that are just like smudges of living substance and there are some reasonably integrated creatures that have identity and some structure. Some look like beings. Some look like creatures. And some look like living smudges. All I can ask is what's going on here?
