Euglena sanguinea bloom

Huge bloom of Euglena sanguinea, imaged at 10x darkfield, 20x, and 40x oil.

Freshwater sample from Lumpini park, Bangkok, Thailand.

The red color is due to the presence of the carotenoid astaxanthin, an antioxidant. Astaxanthin is responsible for the pink-red color of salmon.
