...Ok, this looks suspicious to me.
Where is Bill to come up with a story for this when you need him?

Darn, all this bloody graphic violence is getting me down, can't take it, gotta get away from it!! Maybe I'll watch a movie, or TV...
Seriously, too cool! Wonder what on Earth coulda caused that scene?! Just another of the many mysteries we encounter when exploring diatom strews, most of which will probably never be answered.

Re: Crime Scene
I have found out what caused the holes................
The redish-brown body either side of the diatom are Vampyrella. The Vampyrella in its amoeboid stage
has "cut out" the piece of wall and so gained entry into the diatom. Then it has removed every scrap of
protoplasm from the diatom. However, exactly how the Vampyrella does this is not known.
The two brown objects are the cysts.

Wow - a case of life being stranger than fiction! Great detective work exmarine, many thanks for taking the time to bring us that info - a really fascinating creature the Vampyrella. Many thanks again for your effort.exmarine wrote:I have found out what caused the holes................

From BillT's link:
"Many companies and scientists are interested in making biofuels from algae. These would be an almost zero-carbon source of fuel for vehicles. But it is very difficult to break down the outer walls of the algae to obtain the energy-rich sugars within. Hess says the enzymes of vampire amoebas could turn out to be very handy indeed."

What I see is smiply a beautiful image of a diatom with lovely bright-colored decoration .
Re: Crime Scene
Outstanding exmarine!
While I posted originally for fun, the question of what had actually happened here was on my mind.
I was not expecting an answer, and delighted to read what you found out. Thanks for your research and sharing it with us.
