More microscopy outreach

#1 Post by Tom Jones » Tue Nov 15, 2016 2:59 am

On October 29th, I had my microscopes set up at a Science Fair Expo at the Riverside (CA) County Office of Education. Lots of displays and workshops for the kids wanting to do science fair projects. Many STEM experts, generally college professors, available for consultation with the students. Some 300 kids and their parents attended. Photos from the Expo are attached. Specimens were the usual suspects, pond water, meteorite slice, cancer cells, etc.

On November 5th, I had everything set up at the US Navy's Surface Warfare Center (NAVSEA) in Norco, CA., for their open house. Over 2,400 kids and their parents came through. Lot's of really cool Navy displays to go with the microscopes! The bad thing was NO PHOTOS! We were in a restricted area of the base and no cells phones or cameras were allowed.

All of the security folks were in full (save for the helmets) tactical gear! Even a guard dog and handler cruising the displays to make you feel safe. Secrets abound you know  ... Not often STEM displays are that well protected! 8-)

What a fantastic thing to do. So many 'scopes and so many interested young minds.

Thanks everyone! If you can get to them when they're young enough, you can twist them pretty much any way you like. 8-)

I've often thought the instrument manufacturers should do something like this, but on a much larger scale. The cost would be relatively trivial compared to the number of kids you could reach.

Sadly, as far as I can tell, none of them have any inclination to do so. :(

Sadly again we live in a electronic hand held device world that many if not most will not venture out of their own little world and take another look at what real biological life is about.
I could say robot like heads but I just did.
