Virginia Beach Diatoms

#1 Post by rnabholz » Sun Jan 01, 2017 8:54 pm

Charles was kind enough to send me some samples from his neck of the woods. According to his notes these are from Virginia Beach. They were taken from a wet sand sample. The rinsed sand produced a thin broth that I was able to concentrate and clean and produce some nice slides from.

These are all Zerene stacks of between 7 to 15 images. I cleaned up the backgrounds.

American Optical Series 4, 90x Apo Oil, Oiled Condenser, afocal through 10x Compens eyepiece to Nexus 6 Phone.

Id's are the best I could come up with, discussion or corrections are always welcome.

Thanks for the sample Charles!

Very nice!
Did you notice resolution difference vs non-oiled condenser?

Thanks Kit.

Yes, there is a difference in the very fine detail. Definitely worth the effort to do.

Great images
Detail on the first image at 109µm is pretty amazing, but I am thinking that getting the amount of detail that you did on the last one at 38µm is perhaps even more impressive. :)

Thanks CE and 75.

The phone, stacking and some post processing. Beats the heck out of film.

Thanks again
