Surirella sp. [?]

#1 Post by 75RR » Sat Jan 07, 2017 10:13 am

Plan 40x/0.65, Brightfield and DIC, 70µm, 10 and 10 image stacks in Photoshop

Choice of Surirella is pretty much a wild guess - chose it because it looks a bit like Surirella gemma,
from the Kemp 8 Form test plate.
Diatom is from brackish water.

Hi 75,
My first thoughts is this diatom is not Surirella gemma because gemma has large spaces between each individual striae and yours are uniformly spaced along the valve. I'll try and find what I think it might be.
Thank you
Best regards

OK 75,
I thought it might be along the lines of Navicula Jentzii and Amphora exigua but I must settle for a genus of Surirella sp.
Well that made me think for a while and it opened different doors for me thanks 75.
Thank you
Best regards

Lucky guess on my part then.

Somehow I don't think yours was a lucky guess, you knew what it was without reference.
Thank you

My first thought was Eye of Sauron.
Perfectly understandable mix-up. I do however think that technically speaking, as it is missing the evil glint, it can't really be him.
Perhaps this next one will help clear things up:
