Wonderful 'pottery culture' of protozoa you depict here, waterman. My recent observations of lichen/moss draped outdoor rocks turned up testate amobae whose 'tests' shouted out to me there is indeed a 'pottery culture' in the selective process by which the amoebae..select pebbles for their tests/exterior manufactured shells.
Specifically what enchants me with your images #1, and #2, is the abrupt size change of pebbles selected for these amoebaes test opennings. The terminal ring of selected pebbles at these testate amoebae 'manufactured protective shells'...shouts out to me as an enchanting revelation of genetically carried 'pottery culture' in these single cell organisms. An excellent text : " The extended Phenotype" explores and rejoices in observed animal manufactured 'shells'/hives/nests /microhabitats which theymanufacture and which seamlessly mesh with the said organisms actual body metabolisms...literally genetic expressions beyond the body cell..or body cells.
That terminal collar of similar pebbles on your and my observed testate amoeba 'tests/shells', resembles a bracelet my dear son made for me out of selected gemstones for last fathers-day.
I could plop my images into this post , but it's your thread. Congrats on this testate amoeba image series, and thank you, waterman. Charlie guevara
