Large Ciliate

#1 Post by mintakax » Tue Feb 04, 2020 4:12 am

This is one of the largest ciliates I've seen in my pond aquarium.I have a large population of smaller Loxodes, but I will take a guess that this it is some kind of Loxophylium ? The view is clearer around the 40s mark.

Looks like Loxophyllum maleagris, but I'm no expert. Nice catch and video work. Is this using DIC?

Yup. :) (spelled Loxophyllum meleagris, though!)

Great video!

Great video! Thank you for sharing.
For some reason, I always have quite a few of these guys in my aquarium.
Although they are not as..plump as yours, it's quite a sight when seeing a group of them together. I'll try to dig out and share some of my old videos...

Thanks Bruce and hb2sbdb !
Hb2sbdb-- I would love to see other videos of this Loxophylium. Its on a short list of ciliates that don't move quickly away from lights ! I hope I encounter more of them.
