Antique Microscopes.

#1 Post by Mike E. » Thu Jul 16, 2020 6:54 pm

A few years ago I was in San Francisco Airport waiting to catch a plane when I noticed a display of Antique Microscopes. I took some photographs, but time was short for boarding so unfortunately I wasn't able to get the description card information. Not sure if its appropriate to post these photos in the Sandbox section (?), but thought the eye candy might be of interest to some of the members here.

As we are only allowed five photos per post, here are the remainder of the nine remaining display photos.

That is quite a nice collection of microscopes for a display at the airport. Must have been on load from a museum.

Wonderful collection. Wonder if it belonged to the owner of the now-shuttered Technical Instruments Co??

Two of the microscopes I bought from a surplus liquidator in the bay area have these service stickers from Techincal Instrument San Francisco, same company?

Yes - same company and just a few miles South of San Francisco (in Burlingame). The owner (and a good guy) had a large collection of antique scopes --as does at least one other Bay Area dealer oriented more to epi scopes for the semiconductor industry. No idea if the ones displayed here are from that collection.

Yeah I like them old lignum vitae scopes. Hard to get it but I've been using a piece of ipe wood decking with similar properties with some success. So dense and hard I've been tapping holes in it for machine screws.

There is a press release about the Technical Instrument Microscope Collection being on display at SFO in 2002:

Looks like the one Mike got photos of is maybe this Golub collection from UC Berkeley:
