AO Dovetail to Canon EOS T2 Adapter Needed
AO Dovetail to Canon EOS T2 Adapter Needed
Title says it all. I want to replace the shutter part of my AO photo tube with an adapter that bayonets to my Canon T3i. The phototube has been gutted and works fine with the camera body balanced up top, but it probably wouldn't hurt to make things a little more secure. Pictures of the fitting below, plus a picture of everything all put together. The bit I want to replace with an adapter doesn't get used when I image, only used as a dust cap when the camera isn't on board.

Re: AO Dovetail to Canon EOS T2 Adapter Needed
I'm not sure what I am seeing here Kurt but I think I am clear. The shutter assembly ends in a 2" dead end female dovetail, doesn't it? If you can get this;http://www.ebay.com/itm/RafCamera-50-4- ... Sw9mFWJnt3 It's an adapter Rafi made at Raf camera as a custom run, specifically for the 2" AO dovetail. It converts to the M42 .75 thread, so can then be adapted freely to most cameras. Let me know if you need any other help by p.m. good luck.
Re: AO Dovetail to Canon EOS T2 Adapter Needed
Phil, I believe that is precisely what I'm looking for. Is this the same source for such bits that you have mentioned previously? I wasn't quite aware he's in Russia. But yeah, I want to eventually end up with a piece that bayonets to my T3i, then dovetails into the photo tube. If this fits my AO photo tube/camera adapter, then all I need to get is a T2 adapter for EOS, is that right? (Terminology is what kills me.)
Interesting eBay ad, incidentally - I've heard of red commies before, but Russians really use red cameras too????? (If any Russians are reading this, it's all in good fun okay?)
Wait ... in the eBay ad he says "Dovetail part is made with 50.4 mm max diameter". My dovetail at max diameter measures 40mm. As you can see in the photos above, the outside diameter of the fitting is closer to 50mm/2"...

Re: AO Dovetail to Canon EOS T2 Adapter Needed
That's why, since I don't have that exact photostar adapter, I wasn't sure. AO who were staunchly ametric and used inch measurements : 2 inch or ( 50.4mm) and 1 9/16" or ( 37.7mm). They used both of those sizes on their dovetails. I think you have it all together but you need to think from the microscope up, rather than the camera down. Camera adapters are easy and many. Microscope adapters are hard and money. Start with getting the dovetail for your phototube set than adapting to that to the camera is easy. The Raf camera adapters for AO were originally made at my request because there was a noticeable hole in his product line , so I guess he saw that too and rolled with the request. Since I am Canadian , I am half commie so 1/2 good luck, Kurt( well, more than that in actuality, 100% in fact). I won't be back until Sunday. Check in again if you need any fine trimming , I may help with. Maybe yes, maybe no.
Re: AO Dovetail to Canon EOS T2 Adapter Needed
After a similar discussion I had on part sizes a while ago I went out and bought myself a Vernier Caliper that measures in inches and mm.
It effectively eliminated the guess work. Fun too!

75RR, good call -- it's what I shoulda done in the first place if I weren't such a lazy slob... Einman, that sure looks exactly like what I want! Phil got me running scared, sounds like there were two different sizes -- plus the eBay ad he pointed me to states 50mm diameter. As usual, however, I'm never clear as to diameter of WHAT, exactly, so hope this picture helps.
Anyway, that's it, I believe. Got a source for it? EDIT: Like this? eBay item number: 191669023203
Now what's a search term I need to use for the camera adapter - M42 to Canon EOS? eBay item number: 401001195347

That's it. The first e-bay item you mentioned. eBay item number: 191669023203
I purchased mine a while back. It discussed using it in another posting for the AO21.
This adapter mates to a T adapter for the canon t3I or also called m42 to canon T3I.
I did not gut the original. I left the lens in place as discussed on my AO21 adapter discussion. You should be set! It works great.

Re: AO Dovetail to Canon EOS T2 Adapter Needed
I was, perhaps, a bit rash and prematurely removed that lens set. One of these days I might see about reinstalling it since I keep everything and never throw anything away like a good hoarder. Probably be best to get another AO photo tube and have options (if I find one cheap - they're usually priced stupidly).einman wrote:I left the lens in place as discussed on my AO21 adapter discussion.
At any rate, my orders have been placed, and I thank you kindly for your assistance!

Re: AO Dovetail to Canon EOS T2 Adapter Needed
I was about to create "AO PhotoStar restomod", when I discovered this topic.
After unscrewing that rectangular scrap from AO's camera body circular flange,
a T2 to M42 adapter fits nicely, registering on the inner shoulder.
JB Weld holds them together; details here:
https://blekenbleu.github.io/microscope/PhotoStar.htm
Even with a full 35mm sensor and no extra extension tubes,
images from the PhotoStar lens are substantially cropped from views with 20mm oculars.
DSLR flange-to-sensor spacing and a relatively thick T2-to-M42 adapter share some blame;
a mirrorless 35mm body with thin flange-to-M42 adapter would reduce cropping.
My restomod's camera image is not perfectly centered, but I judge image sharpness,
as viewed on a 60-inch TV from Canon 6D HDMI, fairly comparable to that from oculars.
Being able to tweak parfocality with AO's 2.8X - 5X slider helps.
