C-Mount Question

#1 Post by linuxusr » Wed May 05, 2021 6:18 pm

Hello All:

It's going to be a long time before I even think about photomicrography. I have a lot of basics to hone before I get there.

However, since my Zeiss Primostar 3 is a trinoc, I want to get my bearings for the future. Not knowing anything about the C-mount, I imagine that is is no more than an adapter between the photo tube and the camera.

But when I see that the price for the Zeiss C-mount is just shy of $400.00, I am shocked. Then I see a photo in which, yes, there is an adapter, but there is also a set of lenses that connects to the photo tube. Now I understand the price.

Can you explain a little further, exactly what is going on with the C-mount? And pros/cons of third-party C-mounts . . .

I see there is a robust thread here on cameras, so I'll read through that to get some idea of a first camera that doesn't break the bank.
