Do I really need a 17 inch laptop screen?

#1 Post by PeterHamburg » Fri Feb 18, 2022 11:35 am

Hi, I am a complete, utter newby!

I want to purchase swiftcam 6.3MP SC633UR-FL.

Its "System requirements for software" read:

CPU equivalent to Intel Core2 2.8GHz or higher
2GB of memory or more
USB 3.0 port
CD-ROM drive (or contact Swift for downloadable file)
17" display or larger

My question: do I REALLY need a 17 inch laptop or will 15 inch suffice? Will it work on 15 inch laptop, at all? I asked a computer expert and he was completely bewildered by this "strange requirement" but was not sure...

Best wishes to all,

Peter, Hamburg (Germany)

It’s nonsense, Peter

… What you need is a screen with sufficient resolution.

Looks like someone made a deal with Dell. It is true that you need good resolution, but that is not dependent upon a 17 inch screen. I have good resolution with a 10 inch, 14 inch and 30 inch screen. Most USB 3 devices will work with a USB 2 port if plugged directly into the computer rather than a USB hub. The main difference there is speed, not resolution.

A word about screen resolution.

Most low end laptops are 720p.

I recently upgraded to a machine at 1080p and images are a lot crisper.

From Specifications of Laptop screen and External PC Monitor, Most of them are 1920x1080 Pixel on screen (Full HD Resolution).

So no matter what screen size you selected, 14, 15.6 or 17 Inch screen, all of the are the same resolution (Full HD).
Very few Laptop Screen are 2K (2560x1600) Pixel or 4K (3840x2160) Pixel. You can check from their specifications, it is also very expensive.

The Bigger screen size make it easier for view, like large screen TV. But not make image sharper except it is 2K or 4K resolution.

Swiftcam 6.3MP SC633UR-FL can display 2048x1536 at 12 FPS, or 1024x768 at 32FPS.

So you can select 2048x1536 resolution at 12 FPS (quite slow fps) to display on 1920x1080 Pixel screen.
But need not to be 17 Inch screen, if you are OK with 15.6 Inch Laptop screen, it is OK.

It is not worth to select 2K Laptop screen with this Swiftcam, In my Opinion.

I doubt a person can tell much difference between images on a 15" and 17" screen. Depends a lot on what you find a comfortable viewing distance. I find 12.5" and 14" laptop screens quite adequate. Many/most? laptops also have video ports to which you can connect an external monitor--even a TV--if you do want a larger screen.
