The 1x does have a lens in it, but just at the very base. The 1x that ends in a 38mm OD accepts further lenses to reduce or expand the image, or a "1x" c mount adapter with no further lenses in it.

It seems it's rather me who should look twice before posting: The intermediate 1:1 optics for the S9D contains (in contrast to the intermediate tube at my Leica compound microscope) an optical element at the front of the adapter, see picture below.
