3d print dslr adapter for sw380t

#1 Post by jomosoft » Tue Nov 08, 2022 5:53 pm

I just watched the diy dslr adapter video on youtube (for Swift Stellar 1). Has anyone tried this for the Swift sw380t ! Is it possible?

Hi

I’ve read this thread Louise but I’m particularly interested in a non-lens adapter like in the mentioned video. The question basically is if the tube can be removed (sufficiently) like the one on the stellar-1.

You've probably also seen my previous thread for dslr without an ep https://www.microbehunter.com/microscop ... 764#p92764
but I found I got better results with the (astronomy) EP that I used. I've moved on from the Swift since earlier this year. I did buy some actual Chinese 30mm microscope EP's with a 23mm fn which are excellent, and might also be good as photo eyepieces https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334528133893 ... SwBwhi8snR.

But you used a 2x reduction lens in the adapter didn’t you ? In Oliver’s video he lowers the camera sensor position to the place the image is projected in the tube.

That bought dslr adapter did have a x2 lens in it. It's obviously necessary to expand the image to try and fill the sensor area. I seem to remember I wasn't particularly happy with it. I think the 25mm focal length ED astro eyepiece worked out at equivalent to an 10x EP (250 / 25 = 10) but I got the best results afocally i.e. with an 18-55mm camera lens attached to the Canon dslr and the 25mm EP below. That way the EP behaves as a normal (wide field) ocular and the camera+lens emulates the eye.

In his comparison video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKs8SM81AUA
... Oliver indicated that photo tube is removable from trinocular port of either Stellar 1 or SW380T (1:14 / 14:06)
However, note that the Stellar 1 uses infinity objectives, while the SW380T uses 160mm tube length objectives;
results may not be comparable:
  • SW380T objectives' image circle may be smaller, not filling camera sensor
  • infinity microscopes have a tube lens, which may correct objective aberrations
  • finite objectives may require matching eyepiece or photo relay to correct aberrations
This is why an afocal arrangement, as used by Louise, may yield better results.

Yeah, you could try that with the 380T but a) the Stellar 1 appears to have a wider port and b) it has infinity optics. That means it has a tube lens so you can place the camera sensor at the tube lens focal length. I've done that with my infinity Amscope. But finite microscopes are usually better with intermediate optics.

Louise

ps the intermediate optics aren't required to correct any aberrations with the 380T - they just seem to give a better result with big sensors / dslrs

Oke….tnx for the info. My sw380 will arrive tomorrow. Maybe it’s worth a try, otherwise I’ll go with my current setting, an iphone adapter.

With a high quality adapter I think you can get very good results on a phone with an EP in the trinocular. Just as good via the binocular but maybe less convenient.
Do post some results :)
