Magnification Issue

#1 Post by Kalpa » Mon Nov 21, 2022 3:13 am

I want to connect a dslr camera to my microscope (Optika 193pl). The microscope dslr camera adapter has 2.5x magnification. (eyepiece has 10x).

Does it means I can only get the magnification of 2.5×10 or 2.5×40 when i use 10x and 40x objectives with dslr camera adapter?

Well it's a camera, so the magnification is going to depend on the size of your computer screen or the eventual print.

The idea behind camera adapters is to size the image onto the camera's sensor/ film. Most DSLRs will be able to do a good job capturing the resolution from most of the image circle (especially for higher na lenses), so usually it's considered good practice to have the sensor pick up as much of the circle as will fit while covering the entire sensor with projected image, about the inner 2/3s or so.

A 2.5x camera adapter typically fits a full-format DSLR. An APS-C camera will capture a reduced part of what you see in the eye-pieces.

Hi,
This is the area that can be captured by an APS-C or full frame camera, after going through a 2x camera adapter.
If you have a 2.5x adapter, the area can be captured is smaller.

I'm not sure how that image was generated. If that's a 2x magnification on the camera adapter it implies a field number of like 29mm in the eyepiece. It might make sense for a 2.5x magnification if you have a 23mm fn eyepiece. The optika he's working with has a fn of 18 so the crop would not be nearly that extreme--a 2.5x on full frame would be almost ideally sized.
