Problem mounting Canon EOS R10 on Olympus BH2 BHS

#1 Post by Globi » Fri Feb 10, 2023 1:32 pm

Dear Microbehubters,

I just bought a Canon EOS R10 MILC for my Olympus BH2-BHS trinocular microscope (it was recommended for microscopy). Adjusting it to my laptop was difficult, due to the default settings of the camera and especially due to the compatibility problem between the EUS Utility 3, Photo digital professional 4, and Windows 10. I have to mention that the official Cannon help desk could not help! (The Photo digital professional 4 program sends incorrect error messages!!)

I had a Canon EOS 2000D and with its adapter, I could mount the R10.
But I have two Olympus BH2-BHS trinocular microscopes so I need another adapter, which I have not found. I bought the recent one only half a year ago, but at this seller it is sold out. I bought an adapter adjustable into the ocular tube. With this adapter I can not make images with the objectives 2x and 1x. The objectives touch the thin section, but the image is not sharp. It should have been placed closer, but it is impossible.
Is this problem solvable?
In all cases, I prefer to use the trinocular part and not the ocular for making micrographs. Do you know a company that sells adapters for Olympus Bh2 BHS and Canon EOS.

Thank you in advance for your help
Ágnes

Of course it's solvable using the trinocular head.

The Canon EOS Utility 3 is not listed on the Canon website as being compatible with the R10. It looks like EOS Utility 3.16.0 is the newest compatible version. Canon support should have known that. There's a newer version of PDP 4 as well. The R10 uses an RF mount, not the same as the older 2000D EF mount. The flange to sensor distances are very different.

As for the adapters, take a look at Alan Wood's website. Here's the BH-2/BHS adapter page: http://www.alanwood.net/olympus/digital ... eraadapter

Unfortunately neither the PA1-10A or the Photomicro Adapter L are available on eBay right now. They're getting kind of rare and a bit pricy. The are, however, just empty tubes with the Olympus dovetail on one end and a T-mount screw thread (PA1) or OM Mount (Photomicro) on the other. Not that difficult to have made with the T-mount thread. Just get the appropriate T-mount adapter for your R10, add the NFK 2.5x projection lens (or the NFK 1.67x if you want the best frame match for the APS-C sensor and don't mind the $600+ cost) and you're good to go.

You can also rig up a camera stand and a bellows: https://krebsmicro.com/microsetup2/index.html

And you might take a look at this, also from Charlie Krebs: https://krebsmicro.com/pdf/trinoc_a3.pdf

You can also use one of these, you just have to remove the obsolete beamsplitter guts.
