What Is This?? Paging Mr. Apochronaut!
What Is This?? Paging Mr. Apochronaut!
I got this in a grab bag deal off eBay a while back, have no clue what it is, but suspect maybe a photo eyepiece/relay lens? In the photo I have posed it with a pair of ordinary AO cat no 176 eyepieces for size and appearance comparison.

EFL = Effective Focal Length ?
Zeiss Standard WL (somewhat fashion challenged) & Wild M8
Olympus E-P2 (Micro Four Thirds Camera)

That's my take. But what can it mean?
One other thing I've notice about it: when inserted into standard AO photo tubes that are compatible with AO infinity series trinoc heads, the outside diameter matches that of the photo tube fairly precisely.

seen one before but don't know.
possibly a photo eyepiece but they also had some photo telescope eyepieces, for the elaborate photo stands, to establish parfocality.
have you tried it as a photo eyepiece?

Please excuse what is probably a dumb question: since it looks like a very low power eyepiece, could it be a projection eyepiece used with a prism or mirror to project an image on a wall?

"for sure"? ... for sure, what?? Somebody thinks it looks like a prime candidate for a projection lens?
How is it obvious that it's a low power eyepiece? (No need to excuse yourself Gekko, your questions are excellent, as usual.)
No, I haven't tried it as a photographic eyepiece, not yet.
Can't believe Phil's stumped, what's the world coming to?

I have one of the eyepiece projectors:

There are projection eyepieces too. Not all are equipped with a right angle feature.
Re: What Is This?? Paging Mr. Apochronaut!
Kurt, I thought it was an eyepiece because it is shaped like a long eyepiece and the diameter of the part that inserts into the microscope looks the same as the other two eyepieces in the picture. It looked to me like a very low power eyepiece because it is physically much longer than usual eyepieces, and so I assumed (guessed) that it has a long focal length (hence low power-- think magnifying loop).KurtM wrote:How is it obvious that it's a low power eyepiece?
