water lens under UV...

#1 Post by chrisimbee » Sat May 01, 2021 3:00 pm

Hello,

here is a water lens found on the surface of a local pond....
The UV source make all the chlorophyll granules emmit a red light through the transparent menbrane of the cell....

Curious what a "water lens" means, as photographed here? Is it just a drop of water with pond scum underneath and further magnified 400x?

Tiny floating water plants, a circular leaf with tiny root, named "water lens". Often seen in aquaria and serve as shelters for newborn Guppy/Zebra fish. Easily proliferate.

Although the laser pointer yields the fluorescence image, IMHO an ordinary lamp (halogen/LED) equipped with a filter which transmits a wavelength of 405-440nm would give a better image. For chlorophyll fluorescence, UV (namely, <390nm) is less than optimal.

Also commonly known in some areas as "duckweed"
