Planktonic Diatoms
Planktonic Diatoms
I must have been reasonably well behaved over the past year, as Santa brought me a brand new plankton net. I took it for a test drive by dragging it up and down the dock at a nearby boat ramp to see what's in the cooler winter water. This is 29.5º N latitude, so when I say 'cooler winter water' we're talking around 50ºF/10ºC. Anyway, I was rewarded with a rich haul, and today I present some of the diatoms I found at or near the surface, no closer than 20 feet/6 meters from the shoreline.
Besides diatoms, there were myriad ciliates, larvae, and other critters in the 'soup', as you see in the last picture which is being 'photo bombed' by a couple of dinoflagellates.

Re: Planktonic Diatoms
Thank you very much!
PM to Doron: I still have those shells and will get busy on them one of these days, I promise! Do you remember what I'm referring to?

Re: Planktonic Diatoms
Hi Kurt,
beautiful photos again! In a chemically cleaned sample some of these diatoms would be difficult to find.

Thanks, y'all!
Microbob, I agree you're probably correct. But one of these days I'll successfully clean a Cylindrotheca fulsiformis, and when I do I'll be able to process anything!
