Hi,
I found this colorful Bursaria a few days ago. I would say it is Bursaria Truncatella, but as I read on Foissner - Berger friendly guide to identify ciliates, it might be also Bursaridium Pseudobursaria. It's so full of food that I can't see the shape of the macro nucleus. I would appreciate some help with the ID.
Thanks in advance,
Javier.

I was so focused on the shape of the M.N. that I missed the size factor. This is certainly Bursaria Truncatella.

Thank you, Jochen. It was huge indeed, the video was taken at 100 x.ImperatorRex wrote: ↑Wed Aug 03, 2022 7:59 pmHi Javier,

If there's any doubt, you can also distinguish Bursaridium from Bursaria by the orientation of the long, curved vestibulum (a funnel-like structure leading to the mouth). In Bursaria, it curves to the left of the cell, in Bursaridium to the right.
As you say, if the size is >200 micrometres, it's almost certainly Bursaria. However, Bursaria truncatella is not the only candidate. In a posthumously published monograph, Foissner and his colleagues review the genus, and provide detailed information on six more species of Bursaria: https://www.researchgate.net/publicatio ... _Edited_by

Thanks, Bruce, for your always interesting input. I'll read those publications as soon as possible.
