I found some Volvox for the first time, I was able to get some nice darkfield and oblique lighting views. Most of all of the clips are sped up 1000% except for the final clip. These guys looks super cool! Thanks for looking

Cool video and nice editing. Darkfield compliments Volvox particularly well.

Thanks everyone! I hope I can find some more soon! It was just from a cup of water from a pond here in NC. Thanks for checking it out and hopefully I’ll have more to come.

Great encounter, thanks for sharing with forum.
What sort of pond did you sample for these wonderful protists? What approximate date did you collect this water sample?
Were you simply 'pond life sample collecting'...if so...why only a: 'cup of collected waters'?
Thanks for this microscopy sharing, Jcoogler....charlie g

Hello! I’m not sure exactly how to answer but it is a pond at a park near my house. Not many plants grow in it, especially this time of year. The water was collected a few days ago. I like to go to these ponds and take a jar and just scoop up some water to examine under the scope.

Jcoogler...bravo, congrats..congrats!!! Finding wild collected Volvox species is so, so rare and special an encounter with our micro-neighbors...pretty please take a point&shoot camera to that pond you collected from, first collect another sample..at least a quart-sized wide mouthed container...then take a few pics of that body of water these wonderful specimens are thriving in (? in 12/22 season?).
Please try and do this collection hike before weather 'smacks you down'.
I have never encountered wild Volvox species in all the years I have enjoyed freshwater microscopy. Please try and get back to our forum with a reply...and with pics of your collection site. Happy holidays to all, charlie g/finger lakes/NY

Im glad people enjoy the footage and in glad to have encountered these guys! I remember the park but sadly I’m not sure of which pond I collected the water from. I will probably go back tomorrow morning and collect more water, I’ll snap some images of the location as well, to my eyes, all the pond water looks the same in each of the 3 ponds in this area. I’m not sure if I’ll see more Volvox but hopefully there will be something interesting to find!

I just went back and collected a jar of water from one of the ponds. I’m not seeing any Volvox in this sample after a quick look, just a crazy amount of water fleas so far. Here is a photo of the pond though
