Lab spinel up close

#1 Post by Scarodactyl » Mon Sep 25, 2023 6:51 pm

I rarely actually post my results here but I was happy with how these came out even if they're a bit rushed.
Spinel is a lesser known gem which was historically confused with ruby and sapphire. Its popularity has grown recently but for a long time it was best known for its lab created counterparts which are widely used in the gem trade and in some some scientific and industrial applications.
While it's technically possible to grow well-formed crystals most growth methods produce rounded 'boules' which don't really look like a crystal at all. This one is a classic 'flame fusion' boule, produced by dripping molten spinel onto a seed crystal drip by drip to build it up.

Though it looks smooth at first glance the surface shimmers and is very rough to the touch. It takes a fair amount of magnification but under a 50x objective the true crystal texture finally becomes apparent, revealing the curves to be made of countless overlapping triangular crystal faces.

I like it when hidden properties of a surface are revealed in the micrograph. These are very neat.

"Flame fusion boule"... that's pretty cool!

How'd you ever get your hands on a gem-quality spinel boule, anyway?

...and those photos, absolutely killer!

Flame fusion boules are produced in pretty large quantities for the gem trade, though this one in particular is from defunct grower Djeva. They made theirs to a higher standard and it shows. My main job is a lab created gem business, though usually materials originally grown for industry so this is a bit of an unusual one for me.
