mycellium?

#1 Post by kblackwell » Thu May 23, 2024 10:53 pm

Hi
The little squiggly bits in this picture of mushroom spores.... look like fuzz or threads. Could these be the start of mycellium coming out of the spores, or would they just be some sort of artifact, say from the water drying out of the slide? This is my slide of mushroom spores I created a while back, it's long since dried out. I have doubts that it's an artifact as they only appear near this huge clump and not elsewhere. Or just dust? The slide cover did come off so I put it back.
This is also a picture taken from my fairly cheapo smartfone held up to the eyepiece.

I'm thinking the green blobby object lower left might be some bit of dirt/dust that got in there when the cover came off (slide and cover fell to the floor but didn't break)

Is it possible that these are slime mold spores, rather than fungi? Perhaps the strands are capillitium?

The brown guys are 100% mushroom spores that I collected from a mushroom in my yard - 400x
Otherwise, IDK.

Ah, OK. I guess they might be haploid hyphae (first strands produced by the spores)? I'm just speculating, though.

Thanks - I think that's what they are - though I hadn't heard that term before!
I should read up on this.
