What is this spring-like thing?
Tonight I'm looking at my smoothie (mixed greens, pineapple, cherry, and raspberry). What is this squiggly, spring like thing? I would guess that it has something to do with the pineapple, since pineapple is so fibrous, but there are very few of these in the slide. Also, I didn't find anything remotely similar on a google image search of pineapple under a microscope.

Hi justcurious,
If you wish to know from which food these helices came I would suggest you grind each one separately and then observe a sample from each till you locate a similar structure.
Glad to see you're enjoying your microscope.
Peter.

Hello justcurious. There was a posting earlier in December asking about good adult books about microscopy. Here are two recommendations from then that are quite good as well as the UK web site.
Have your kids had a chance to observe with the new scope yet?
Fascinating hobby!
Try - "EXPLORING WITH THE MICROSCOPE" - by WERNER NACHTIGALL ,It is a well written , hands on book for the new comer or as a refresher course.
Published by Sterling Publishing Co.Inc. New York
ISBN 0-8069-0866-1
"THE MICROSCOPE AND HOW TO USE IT" - by Dr GEORG STEHLI
DOVER PUBLICATIONS,INC NEW YORK
And look at the Microscopy - UK website http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk
