Anyone come across a battery adapter that connects to an external power supply for the olympus E-P2 M4/3

Can't seem to find one anywhere.

Try here:

https://www.amazon.de/Prettyia-PS-BLS1- ... 211&sr=8-3

Sorry it's in Germany but I would think amazon in Spain will have the same thing.

Spain Availability

Says they have 3 in stock. You will probably get it a lot quicker than from china.

Should you need an alternative, I can track down the one I bought from China about a year ago.

I run my Olympus E-PLx cameras off a 7.5VDC power supply. Panasonic µ4/3rds cameras are more finicky.

Thanks for the offer. I placed an order for one from china before I saw Roldorf's post so a little patience and I am basically sorted.

Store bought, this Mean Well GSM25B07. I prefer two-pin plug, table top power supplies that do not clutter electrical outlets, and do not mind spending a few more euros to get a high reliability, medical grade power supply.

See what you mean. That does look more dependable than a usb plug, easy to run out of usb sockets as well, something to think about.

I also think about electrical safety, although this should not be a problem if you power your adapter from a computer or USB hub from an established maker. I and my kith and kin have gotten enough shocks from cheap, switch mode AC power supplies to convince us they are a poor investment. A medical power supply is probably more than anyone needs, but I have other reasons for spending a little more for one.

If you need me to run any tests, I have an E-PL1 which is the light version of your E-P2. It lacks leveling lines and a 1/4000 s shutter, which should be of no consequence when mounted on a microscope. Curiously, it does have a handy, separate button for starting and stopping movies.

Heads up as promised. Picked it up at the Post Office today.

Did a quick check - ran some video off the power supply - looks good.

Camera battery door construction is not really conducive to making holes in it so have removed it.

Thanks to all :)

Thanks Hobbyst46,

it will make quite a difference as not only do the batteries seem to run out at the most inconvenient moment,

but the way it attaches to the focusing rail means I have to remove it in order to open the battery compartment, which of course entails setting the camera up all over again!

Good job.

Would it be possible to mount the camera to the microscope and have it cast an image directly on to the E-P2's sensor? The PEN cameras have a pretty effective anti-shock setting to avoid shutter shock.

Must admit I have not tried the anti-shock setting (had to get the manual out)

This is what it says:

"ANTI-SHOCK
You can select the interval between fully pressing the shutter button and releasing the shutter to be anywhere from 1/8 to 30 seconds.
This diminishes camera shake caused by vibrations. This feature is useful in situations such as microscope photography and astrophotography."

I use a shutter release cable - do you think the anti-shock would be an improvement?

It can make a noticeable difference if you happen to choose an unfavorable, intermediate exposure time. My first week with the PL1, I think I discovered all the times that maximally smeared its images. Then I searched the manual for "microscope" and read about ANTI-SHOCK. 8-)

My read is that the delay is to allow any vibration caused by pressing the shutter button to dissipate before activating the shutter. Is that right?

I use the self timer for that.

The camera, when it takes a picture, closes the shutter, rolls it open and then rolls it closed. The first close slams the shutter to its limit and vibrates the camera. If ANTI-SHOCK is on, the camera briefly waits, to let the vibration die away (you can choose how long), then rolls open and close the shutter, and exposes the sensor. Note that final close also slams the shutter and vibrates the camera, but by then, the sensor is dark and the camera has already finished taking the picture.

Thanks for the translation. That does make it more worthwhile. Will have a go and see if it helps.

As to putting the camera on the microscope and projecting onto the sensor - it is something I have been thinking about. Would require a couple of parts I don't have so it would be a long term project.

Camera `battery´ module is plugged into my monitor's usb port.

Thanks MichaelG., ran a quick test of the anti-shock, no striking difference so far. Probably because the camera is isolated from the microscope.

Will do another assessment (this time with Kemp's 8 form test slide) later.

A better test and perhaps the only worthwhile one, would be with the camera attached to the microscope but I lack the parts to do that.

Annoying !
Cannot explain the shock, but here is my doubt:
My AC adapter is a dummy battery, plugged into a 7.4V, 2A power supply which is fed from a 220VAC wall wart. The Olympus E-P2 uses a BLS-1 battery of 7.4V also, whereas USBs usually provide 5V. It seems that the hard to get part of the AC adapter is the specific dummy battery. So perhaps you could team the dummy battery with a PS from another source ? instead of USB power from the monitor ?

Agree! Will check the ground in the wall socket, the power strip and the UPS ...

What exactly were you touching? (Including type of floor surface, footwear, any metal furniture you were leaning against, etc.)

Was there any noticeably 50/60 Hz buzz sensation or just a sharp tingle?

Is all your equipment ultimately connected to the same wall socket?

Could well be an electrostatic discharge. More than a tingle, made me jump.

After the 2nd shock starting using a pencil to press the buttons on the camera.

Wearing plastic sandals and have a nylon carpet under my chair.

Had a discharge touching the toaster oven a couple of days ago.

Wonder if the earth on the mains electricity in the apartment is not well grounded.
