Synedra fulgens

#1 Post by 75RR » Wed Aug 12, 2020 9:38 am

.
Zeiss Plan 40x/0.65, DIC, 305µm length, stitched and stacked in Photoshop, Marine sample, Alboran Sea.

Think this might be Synedra fulgens var. gigantea
Note 17 stria in 10µm (red block) in enlarged detail image below

Very nice!
I think that a similar species forms start-formed colonies on Ulva green algae.
is there an ID of the small triangular diatom ?

Thanks Hobbyst46

It was a little too small to get any detail from it.

Nice girdle views! I believe the 'small triangular diatom' is of the genus Limorpha.

Many thanks Sabatini and KurtM

Agree with Kurt on possible id.

Here is a (partial?) list of diatoms from the northern Mediterranean, bound to be plenty of overlap with your diatoms:

The second link provides images, length and width + stria per 10µm
