AO part 2070

#1 Post by mnmyco » Tue Oct 06, 2020 12:38 am

Hello Everyone,

Does anyone on know, with evidence/certainty that the vertical illuminator (part 2070) will work for a series 20 or 120? I am pretty sure it is meant for a series 10 DIC. Looking at apo here...

Thanks,

It will work on a 10 or 20. I don’t know how well it works on a 110/120, but it should physically mount up.

Phil (Apochronaut) will be the expert here. I believe that while the dovetail diameter and angle is the same from Series 10/20 to 110/120, the Series 10/20 dovetail is deeper and won't (and shouldn't) fit a 110/120 without a bit of modification. Apparently done because the tube lens corrections are slightly different between those series.

As Zuul says, a Series 20 would be a great host for this fluorescence head. I'd think a Series 110/120 with it's own proper head would work just fine as well, but you would likely have to shorten the male dovetail on your 10/20 era fluorescence illuminator to fit. Or maybe it's the other way around. It might not illuminate the entire field available in a 110/120 head, but I'd guess it would be OK.

Do take care to make sure that such things as barrier filters are still OK and likely start with a new mercury lamp and follow precautions in handling and time of use.

Compatability with the 20 would not be an issue but with a 120 there are two possible incompatabilities to watch out for.
1) The 10/20 microscopes needed a deeper female dovetail well in order to accomodate the travelling telan lens necessary for the Jentsch head. This should not be an issue while transferring a series 10 intermediary part to a 120 but it needs to be watched out for
2) The optical tube of the series 10/20 microscopes was narrower than that of the Series 100 microscopes, since it was not designed with a 20mm fov in mind. It is possible that the 2070 illuminator might have difficulty filling the fie!d on the 120 with an acceptably even circle of light.
