Interesting Attachment......ID???
Interesting Attachment......ID???
Anyone know the intended purpose of this attached mounting bracket? I think it is for a POL microscope. At first thought, such a DIY attachment would seem to be fairly easy to fabricate and offer some great potential for a non POL unit when using lower power objectives with longer working distance. Perhaps an added LED or maybe a needle manipulator??

Re: Interesting Attachment......ID???
They played around with a lot of special lensing apparatus at lower magnification levels before they added those things under the head of the scope in such a way that they were removable or interchangeable.
I've tried such things but have not been successful with it.

Looks to me like it's meant for a low profile knob, to engage the gear rack. Knob and its gear engagement not present - perhaps meant to be removable for an even lower profile while rotating a specimen?
Almost surely not for a LED, needle manipulator, etc.
The usual attachment method is with two guide pins and a single screw - in this case a low profile screw somewhere else.
On edit - thx. for the pix.

This is a Leitz mechanical slide holder which goes on a rotating stage for polarizing light microscopy. The bare 'knobs' are fitted with different click stops used in the identification of minerals. The bracket hits the grooves in the different click stops making a click sound as you move the slide with the mineral thin section and you count the click stops. Zeiss also makes one.
Here is a Leitz with different click stop barrels which goes onto the ends. On a Leitz Pol scope:
