Zeiss STD 18/W/L Nosepiece turret options
Zeiss STD 18/W/L Nosepiece turret options
hello there microbe crowd I am curious to what are my options for the dovetail slide on my std-18 nosepiece
I would liken to go with mix of BrightF and Phase in one turret and 5 doesn't cut it anymore
I have observed some wild differing types some that have 6 slots and and even one that HAD 7

Re: Zeiss STD 18/W/L Nosepiece turret options
There are 3 variations of removable Zeiss Standard nosepieces: a 4 objective nosepiece (these are black and were made for the GFL I believe), a 5 objective nosepiece and a 7 objective nosepiece.*
* Be aware that there are other microscopes by Zeiss that also have removable nosepieces - these will not fit on the Standard.
You need to check that the part that slides into the arm is identical to the one you are using now.
The 7 objective nosepiece is fairly rare, so I suggest that you have one 5 place nosepiece setup for Brightfield and one setup for Phase.
Since they are quick and easy to remove and install it is a practical solution. Most people with removable nosepieces adopt this method - it is what they were designed for after all.

These Zeiss Standard 18 nosepieces are quite expensive, and strt to get impressively expensive whey they have more than 5 seats. The ones for Phomi and Universal are cheaper in comparison. So you might go a completely different route and buy a second microscope and have them set up for their specific purposes.

It is a fact that on ebay, there are many sellers that overprice their products.
This is particularly true if a brand name is involved.
However, a little patience can still yield good results:

I do not think that the price of a Standard Nosepiece has reached that of a complete Standard Microscope yet!

THank you All for the replies I do currently have a 5 place but have noticed most if not all of the 6+ offerings esp the 7-pos I saw seem to be only for the universal boat anchor size scope
and I dont own one of those just a petite 18 series I tried once to coddle together a larger nosepiece for my 18 from a zeiss inverted scope 6-pos turret rather economical 45$ so i gave it a try and tore apart my the 4 pos turret I had taken apart and even though I had the back focal set correct the BCD or Objective circle diameter was greater then to smaller 5 and 4 port turrets it had cropped off the outer part of the image

It would appear that there is also a white 4 place objective nosepiece, as well the single place nosepiece of course.

They fit on both the Standard 18 and the WL.
Unfortunately they tend to go for silly money, so unless you are willing to combine several years worth of xmas and birthday presents, you are better off with two 5 place nosepieces. ;)

Re: Zeiss STD 18/W/L Nosepiece turret options
One handicap of the 7 place nosepiece is also that it is to packed and therefore the DIC stools cannot be installed on such a nosepiece.

Do you mean that the opening are too close together to allow the DIC slide holders to fit?

Re: Zeiss STD 18/W/L Nosepiece turret options
Hi 75RR,
I personally never tried this on a 7 nosepiece, so I cannot provide the details where exactely the collision occures (I just remember such a comment from a past forum thread). Looking at a 5x nosepiece with DIC stools I could imagine that space may become an issue if distance between holes are just 1-2 mm less.

Re: Zeiss STD 18/W/L Nosepiece turret options
Have you actually seen a standard/18 type of turret exceeding 5 Pos, I only knew of their existence recently from that old catalog that was posted but prior to that time I have only known of a 5 pos as being the highest position available for this series of microscopes.
They cleary had a catalog # but in the 6-7 years of looking around I have never laid my eyes on such a item maybe none were produced must have been very pricey item back in those days.

What I find especially interesting in the ad you posted: There are no less than 3 different bino heads on this picture!
- The flat design, known since the GFL, tube factor 1
- The newer model, Siedentopf design (which was used at Zeiss since the 1920s, I think tube factor 1,25)
- The model with the ball like connection to the base, here on the fluorescence microscope (with less inclined eyepieces, I think tube factor 1,25)
Does somebody know the reason for these different bino heads?

Re: Zeiss STD 18/W/L Nosepiece turret options
Well A high thank for all the responses and the vintage zeiss ad , I certainly thought after searching for 5-pos nosepieces and never seeing anything above the 4,5 for at least 5 years off and on that they existed only for the universal which however I do see from time to time but mind you, there Quite pricey +500USD

Re: Zeiss STD 18/W/L Nosepiece turret options
The 7 place nosepieces for the 18 and the WL that I saw sold on ebay went for around half that figure - still a lot of money of course - that is why I do not have one :)... Quite pricey +500USD
