The article "A DIY Approach to Polarized Light Microscopy" in the January 2014 issue of Microbe Hunter reminded me that in the past I have used the lcd from a cheap calculator to get polarizing film.
Junk calculators can be found in thrift stores very inexpensively, I found 5 for a dollar in a local shop.
A typical calculator lcd looks similar to this drawing from wikipedia: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/dc/LCD_layers.svg
The top layer (no. 1 in the drawing) is easy to peel off the display. The adhesive can often be removed with isopropyl alcohol (IPA). If IPA doesn't dissolve the adhesive be careful of any stronger solvent as it may melt the plastic as well as the adhesive.
robotic regards,
Tom
