Hi:
This is Proteus saying hello from Canada.
Having a online hobby microscopy magazine is terrific. I have spent much time garnering titles of microscope books from on-line book dealers and some have been good to add to my collection others not as much.
Having read the first issue of this magazine I have found several articles I am interested in that I want to try.
My interests are with crystals, protists, cell examination. I own a 1000x monocular microscope with Kohler illumination, an iris diaphragm, mechanical stage and the other trappings of a lab grade microscope. I am also using a USB digital camera that slips into the main ocular tube and the image is piped to my Windows computer that runs the software to view the real time image.
I would like to know the techniques people have tried to successfully get thin tissue sliices with a microtome. Also what are good stains for general tissue examination. Just as an aside I found the magazine article on examining the chromosomes of a lily fascinating and would like to try it! BTW, the stain toluidine blue also stains chromosomes.
Welcome to the forum. I'm interested to know more about the USB camera that slips into the eyepiece. Are you satisfied with the system? I've heard of these cameras before, but have not yet had an opportunity to try them. What resolution does the camera have?
I invite everyone who has a camera also to post pictures!
Oliver.
The camera I am using is a MI-DC1300, 1.3 megapixel with a maximum resolution of 1280x1024 resolution. I purchased it for about $150 USD from Home Science Tools in Montana. They have a web site and a catalog. Here they sell microscopes, accessories, prepared slides, a few stains, etc. I got excellent service from them. My orders were all through the mail.
Generally I am satisfies with the camera. The software that comes with the camera is another matter. It takes some time reading through the manual to figure out what to do. Or at least it did for me. Once you figure out the basics with some patience you can change your magnification or use the mechanical stage to move and the image is updated on the monitor screen. There is a bit of lag but nothing to bad.
I was going to send some sample photos but I had no success. :(

Thanks for the information.
To include pictures: I now added a help page (link is at the top of the forum), which describes how to include pictures.
