Hi,

I am thinking about buying this microscope:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2000X-…..5d3abb1d34

I will be using it for mushroom identification and need the lighting from below, and above. I am not sure what kind of top illuminator would be compatible with this type of microscope, or how you can even interpret compatibility. Can you recommend the best way to light the top of a slide with this microscope?

Thank you!

Hello Alicia,

You could illuminate the top of the slide using a simple desk lamp,or you can use a fibre optic lamp that has one or two adjustable, flexible, arms.

What will you be using the microscope for?Would it be identification of the whole mushroom and/or do you want to identify the spores and view sections?

I wonder if you may be better off using a stereo 'scope that has top and bottom lighting and a good working distance.

I hope this may shed a glimmer of light on your problemSmile

Hi Tony,

I will be identifying spores (bottom lit), and examining gills/caps (top lit). I saw the type of illuminator with arms and wondered if that was the right type.

How can I tell compatibility between the microscope and the light? I want to purchase one but since I'm going to do it online, I want to make sure when it arrives that it will fit.

Thanks for your help!!

Hi Alicia,

I think you will need two microscopes, a compound microscope as you have a listing for above to identify spores and a stereo microscope for examining the fungus parts.

Hope this helps.

Peter.

Hello Alicia

Peter is absolutely right,I agree a compound and a stereo would be ideal.

You may be able to find a small stereo for the cost of a suitable top light.

I don't think you will have enough space under the objectives of a compound to be able to examine the gills/caps.
