Midge larva (order Diptera, family Chironomidae, subclass Tanypodinae). 10x objective, 1.25x head magnification, 2.5x projection lens, Olympus E-P1 camera body. The still image is a composite of four separate images stitched using Adobe Elements 10.
Thank you, molehill. Elements appears to be very good at stitching, and it also fills in the gaps in the background automatically. In auto mode, it would not stitch in the tail section (I guess he moved his tail slightly between pictures), so I used manual mode and moved the tail image to about where it should be, and the program snapped it in place without any visible evidence of the joint.
